Red Harvest

Hammett, Dashiell

(NY, 1929)

1st edition of his first book, the archetype hardboiled detective novel. Published the same year as Burnett’s Little Caesar, and together they launched a new world writing invention that’s meaner than a puppy juggler and turns on 2 propositions. Sometimes we must rise above principle, and no strength matches that of necessity. Fine in near fine (light wear at extremities) 1st state dustjacket with hype not reviews on the back, despite the bibliography mistakenly picturing the 2nd (reprint) dustjacket and identifying it as the 1st (discover by intuition, prove by logic).

Mike Wallace: “You killed at least one man … How many more?”
Mickey Cohen: “Well, I have killed no man, in the first place, that didn’t deserve killing.”
