Siddhartha
Berlin: S. Fischer, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. (in German) with Erste bis Sechste Auflage on the first line of the copyright. Publisher’s tan boards (also issued in backed boards and in wrappers). Spine tips chipped, wear along joints, a faded stripe to the lower covers but a good, sound, unrepaired copy. Not scarce and temptingly priced to reflect that. Good. Item #1095
The coming–of–age novel of a man (Siddhartha), in India, seeking enlightenment. He and his friend meet the Buddha and receive some hints of preliminary instruction. The friend joins Buddha’s order but Siddhartha, while acknowledging Buddha’s illumination, feels that his teaching, after some point, does not account for the distinct experiences of each person. Looking to the wider world, he eventually finds a teacher in “The River” and concludes that every truth has truth in its opposite and it is that view that begins to expose the world to him in its completeness.
Everybody thought Siddhartha was saintly, until they went through his old tweets.
