The Man-Eater
[Eshbach]: [1955]. First Edition. One of 300 copies, letter size, pp. 50, original blue paper wrappers, printed title label, green endpapers, mimeographed duplication offset from a typescript, a few spots and points of wear, very good. Item #1387
Preceded only by a serialization in The Evening World in November 1915, this is a pirated edition produced by Lloyd Eshbach, a publisher turned Burroughs enthusiast operating outside the bounds of authorization. An authorized edition of 3,000 copies followed in 1957, making this the rarer of the two, though its scarcity has never translated into significant demand. You should read this because you’re curious, right? It's Burroughs unpolished and unguarded, a pulp adventure in its rawest form, closer to the typescript than to the finished book.
