Bishop was a perfectionist, who only published 101 poems in her lifetime. The overt of her poetry is a precise photo realistic account of the physical, but a closer analytic examination exposes the reader to humanistic themes of longing, depression and alienation. Since her death in near obscurity, Bishop has been noted among the great American poets of the 20th century.
