The Sword in the Stone

London: Collins, 1938. First Edition. Leather and Jewel. 1st edition of an Arthurian classic from the day it was published. 1 of just 5 (total) copies for presentation (ours inscribed to author David Garnett) with all 42 of the author’s printed line drawings in the text hand water colored by him. White’s signed presentation inscription is on the title page, and his signed limitation notice is on the half–title, defining the edition and naming all 5 recipients, and both are embellished with his designs in watercolor. Wholly luxurious, (genuine) emerald, ruby and sapphire jeweled bindingby Donald Glaister, an edgy, surreal, sub–gothic design of multicolored, gilt decorated morocco and stingray, with metallic plunging sword, castle walls of stone, Escher–like stairs that lead to nowhere, and through cathedral windows, a vista of Britain in the distance (this is book art, and not to be confused with art book). Matching full morocco case (the original plain black cloth is preserved in a compartment of the case. Lightly foxed, else fine condition (virtuous and breathtaking). The jewels are large and extraordinary (aerial quality). Take the risk, feel the rush, beautiful books love you back. Fine. Item #247
