Item #248 Typescript, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Tennessee Williams.

Typescript, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

1954. Wrappers. Typed carbon manuscript of a very early version, for the play’s pre–Broadway tryout, in Phladelphia. 4to. (2), 2, 35, 48, 35pp. Brad bound in wrappers, with title, and the Hart Stenographic Bureau address. Chip to the front corner, but very good. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof won the 1955 Pulitzer for drama. Scarce (7 typescripts are recorded, most in Wood wraps). This state has the elements found only in its earliest form, i.e. Brick’s last scene admittance that: “I might be impotent, Maggie” and a brief scene following Big Daddy’s elephant joke (itself cut shortly after the Broadway debut, and replaced with the “mendacity” speech). Very good. Item #248
