Item #276 Original Portrait of Sherlock Holmes. Sidney Paget.

Original Portrait of Sherlock Holmes

1904. Original drawing, ink and wash (6” X 8”), a striking image of the unprecedented man, a fine art piece by the original illustrator of the Holmes periodical appearances in The Strand magazine, as well as all of those in the British 1st editions of the Adventures, Memoirs, Hound and Return. Rare. Near fine. Item #276

Beginning with the first Holmes short story (1891), until Paget’s death in 1908, he was the only illustrator Doyle would have for the series’ 1st appearances in The Strand, as well as the 1st book editions, and Paget’s vision influenced every future concept, and every future interpretation of the great detective. In the end he’d drawn 356 different illustrations for 37 stories and 1 novel. Over 90% of them have been lost, but one survivor (albeit a good one) sold for $220,800 (Sotheby’s NY, Nov. 16, 2004). And ours is a portrait, and only 1 other Paget portrait of Holmes is known to me, that other one sold originally from our Biblioctopus catalog 8 (Bad Dreams) in 1983.
