Denarius; Crawford 452/2 var!

MINT MOVING WITH CAESAR: 7, 48BCE. Female head (rt.), wearing oak wreath and diadem. LII (52, Caesar’s age?) behind. Gallic arms and ”CA –SAR” on rev. below. The error of a backwards “R” instead of an “E” in CAESAR is inexplicable, but the rarity is not. Caesar would not have tolerated his name being misspelled and how even 1 coin survived is surprising. Unique so far (see: *[7var.] Cr.458 var. for another unique coin in the collection with Caesar’s name misspelled), and the only one of a kind variant of Cr. 452/2 known to me. 19mm. 3.52 grams. Banker’s mark to cheek on obverse else near extremely fine, with absolutely ideal old cabinet toning (it was in a private Italian collection for decades and took 6 months to clear crazy Italian customs but now it is hidden away in Atherton where no one will ever think to look for it). Beyond the gunmetal base tones are multi–color flashes on both sides. Item #356
