Denarius; Crawford 457/1 var!

MINT WITH ALLIENUS IN SICILY: 12, 47BCE. Cr. 457 (no cloak on or around his hand), an unrecorded (or unnoticed) die. The strike seems easily sharp enough to show the cloak (some say a lion pelt) if it were there, but I can’t see it, so deduce it was omitted by accident. That said, no one has recorded another example of this die, so it may be quite a rarity, or it may just be quite a delusion. Very fine to near extremely fine, dark toning with copper highlights in the fields on the rev. 18.5mm. 3.74 grams. Item #361
