Rev. with emblems, AVGVR above, PONT • MAX below, “D” (not “M”) to rt. Extremely fine. Well centered, with tangerine colored highlights on rev. 19mm. 3.96 grams. Cr. 467/1a. Sear 57. BMC, Africa 21. Minted to pay his legions after the African campaign waged against Scipio and Pompey’s former supporters that culminated in the battle of Thapsus in April, 46 B. C. Ex–U. B. S. (Switzerland), Sept. 9, 2008 (lot 1098, $1,925, an elite coin, from their wonderful and quality filled sale number 78), cataloged by them as “extremely fine to uncirculated” but I’m satisfied to just grade it extremely fine. Cr. 467/1a, and 467/1b vary primarily in that a “D” (donativum = largess) is on the reverse of the former, and an “M” (munus = a gift) is on the reverse of the latter.
