Denarius; Crawford 467/1b

MINT MOVING WITH CAESAR IN NORTH AFRICA (Utica?). 16, 46BCE. Head of Ceres, goddess of agriculture (rt.), “DICT • ITER COS • TER T” around. Rev. with emblems, AVGVR above, PONT • MAX below, “M” (not “D”) to rt. Cr. 467/1b. BMC, Africa 23. The obv. is well centered, the rev. about 15% off–center, but this is a dazzling coin with exquisite details and some luster under magnification of copper, gold and blue on the obverse and even more of it on the reverse (all the rainbow hues of bad meat). Item #365

Cr. 467/1a, and 467/1b vary primarily in that a “D” (donativum = largess) is on the reverse of the former, and an “M” (munus = a gift) is on the reverse of the latter.
