Denarius; Crawford 468/2

MINT MOVING WITH CAESAR in Spain: 18, 46-45BCE. Diademed head of Venus (left), the only Caesar where the head faces left. Star hair ornament of 8 rays (as pictured by both Sear and Crawford) but also seen with 7. “CAESAR” in exergue on rev. below seated captives (the male and female figures are reversed from our number 9, Cr. 468/1). Not quite extremely fine but not far from it, well struck with acute details (18 mm. 4.01 grams). Minted within a few months of 468/1 (Summer? 45 B. C.) but in smaller numbers. One might deduce from Crawford’s die numbers that this is a rare coin (less than 30 obv. dies and less than 33 rev. dies), and it has proved stubbornly scarce in this condition, but worn examples seem to show up with some unexpected regularity. The last of Caesar’s military issues, and maybe the 4th rarest. Cr. 468/2. BMC, Spain 86. Item #367
