Denarius; Crawford 480/10

Rome: 36, 44BCE. Wreathed head of Caesar (rt.), “CAESAR DICT • PERPETVO” (die with the dot between). Venus standing (left), scepter with shield below on rev. “P SEPVLLIVS MACER.” Very fine. 18mm. 3.73 grams. Cr. 480/10, not pictured in Crawford, but it’s not rare, and his description is of this die style, with a dot, and Sear pictures a coin with the dot as his 107a. BMC Rome 4169. Ex–Sammlung Leo Benz (Lanz, Munchen), 1998, cataloged by Lanz as “fast vorzüglich” (nearly extremely fine) but the head of Venus on the rev. is a weaker strike than I would like for that grade. By comparison, another example, cataloged by CNG as near extremely fine, did have a bolder strike, and brought $16,100 at their sale number 85 on 15 Sept. 2010 (and yes, I did bid on it, but I am tenuous with my limits on the Caesar portrait coins that are not rare).
