Denarius; Crawford 443/1 var!

MINT MOVING WITH CAESAR in Northern Italy: 4, 49BCE. Elephant (right), trampling serpent. “CASAR” for “CAESAR” with the E carved over an A (a failed attempt to correct a miscut die), in exergue (unseen by Crawford and unique so far). 4 pontifical implements on reverse. From 833 obverse dies, there is only 1 obverse die like this one and it was likely suppressed before many coins were struck. BMC Gaul 27. Kestner 3516. Sear, Roman Imperators pp. 8–9 (all for the usual issue). The first silver Caesar and the first to bear his name. Very fine, amazing blue and red toning washed all over both sides. (19.6mm, 3.79g).
