Denarius; Crawford 443/1 var!

MINT MOVING WITH CAESAR in Northern Italy: 5, 49BCE. Elephant (right), trampling serpent. “CAESAR•” (with dot) for “CAESAR” in exergue (unseen by Crawford and unique so far). 4 pontifical implements on reverse. From 833 obverse dies, there is only 1 obverse die like this one and though it may not have been suppressed (a dot would not have raised alarms) it is so rare that something got in the way of regular distribution. BMC Gaul 27. Kestner 3516. Sear, Roman Imperators pp. 8–9 (all for the usual issue). The first silver Caesar and the first to bear his name. Very fine. (17.9mm, 3.89g). Item #412
