A 1980s censorship target of the warriors against joy because puberty and sex were subjects and there was anti–Christian praying and, not surprisingly, it was frequently suppressed and so listed on the American Library Association’s register of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books. In 2010 Time Magazine featured it among their 100 Best English Language Novels After 1923, saying, “Blume turned millions of pre–teens into readers. She did it by asking the right questions–and avoiding pat, easy answers.”.
